Snail Mail: A New Way to Reach Romance Readers
Over the last couple of years I seriously considered removing my indie romance novels from Amazon. It’s not for lack of trying. I’ve said it time and time again. The problem is that in order to have my novels available on other platforms, my published lumps them in with Amazon. It’s infuriating. And it is to the point where I’m going to make zero dollars, let alone pennies, every time someone buys my books on Amazon. In deciding to leave my books on Amazon for the external reach of other distributors, I’ve come up with a way to take more control over my writing and reach readers in a new and unique way. As a result, I’ve created The Dirty Dispatch Club: a snail mail subscription service that is real mail with unreal smut delivered to your mailbox every single month. Want to know more? I thought you might.
Business, Meet Snail Mail
I’m not just an author, although, that’s a pretty great accomplishment. I’m also an experienced entrepreneur. Because of my business-focused brain, I’m always on the look-out for ways to improve delivery of my work, including my writing. This blog platform is a result of having an entrepreneurial mindset and wanted to put something into the world related to being creative. As an author of seven romance novels and countless non-fiction books related to business and professional development, I know a thing or two about the publishing industry. Not only do I write all my own content, I also edit it, type set it, format it, design all my interiors, covers, book blurbs and do all my own marketing. I source my publishers and do all my own proofing.
Having complete control over what happens to my intellectual property is important to me. While I’d love a book deal, I’m not about to have someone else tell me my work isn’t good enough to publish. Because it’s already published. I deemed it worthy. And so have hundreds of people who have purchased my books and come back for more. But my business brain knows indie publishing is expensive and it’s getting to the point where I’m going to have to start charging a lot more money for my books if costs keep rising. Already, a single book purchased directly from my published, with shipping, is going to run you over $50 CAD. Who is going to pay for that? I’m seeing it in the data: most people purchase the first book and don’t come back for the second, third, or sixth.
Things are Not What They Seem Online
On Amazon, people purchase more than one book because the shipping is “free”, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not free. Instead of making $10 profit on my books when you purchase them directly from me or from my distributor, I make $0.14 per book. That’s because I’m paying for that free shipping. It’s convenient, sure. Everyone uses Amazon. But it’s not realistic or fair, to be honest, for the work that goes into creating those books.
That said, I’m not going to stop publishing my books on Amazon. It’s reach. While it’s reach I don’t care about because it doesn’t happen that often that someone buys one of my books on Amazon, in order to have a global ISBN attached to my indie publications, it has to be made available on Amazon. Fine. Whatever.
But in an effort to continue to get my stories out there and share them, knowing people love tangible books as much as they love e-books, I created and launched The Dirty Dispatch Club. For only $8 a month, I’ll send you a new, exclusive short story featuring some of the hottest smutty romance you’ve read this side of the internet. And the best part is it won’t be on the internet: it’ll be in your hands, delivered to your mail box, via snail mail.
Slower Pace, More Connection, More Snail Mail
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been seeing this trend toward getting off the internet and getting back to basics and I love it. Yes, give me a book. For sure, give me a hand-written letter. Oh please, give me a package with some goodies in it that didn’t come from the dead halls of Amazon or worse, some country where work standards are terrible.
Snail mail seems like a simple idea, but I’ve put my business brain to work to make this work for everyone. I literally weighed paper. I designed the storybook feature to include in the mailer so that it’s easy to read and I can cram as much smutty romance as possible into a few pages. Because I design all of my own book covers, I’m able to provide covers for all of my short stories that I’ll send you. Because who knows? Maybe those short stories will turn into full-blown books someday. I’ll be registering the titles and obtaining ISBNs for all of them. I’m also writing a letter for each mailer that goes out to talk about the story: there’s nothing like a behind-the-scenes connection to where a story came from and how it came to life. Plus, stickers, bookmarks and some other goodies will be rotated out each month. And you know what? That $8 probably doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but I’ll make more sending just one envelope out to share The Dirty Dispatch Club than I will selling a book on Amazon.
Seeing Things From a Different Perspective
This isn’t about thinking I’m too good for Amazon. My books are there. But it is about getting back more of that control I was talking about related to my work. And it’s about creating a unique ecosystem for my work to thrive. I love a good hands-on project so this is right up my alley. Do I want to spend my time folding paper and stuffing envelopes? Yeah, you bet your ass I do. I freaking love that kind of stuff. Have I ever told you that I’m a recovering scrapbooker? If you came to my house, I’d have to resist the urge to plant a very heavy and overflowing scrapbook on your lap to show you about one of my many adventures. I commit to paper the way people commit to their jobs. And now I want to make it more of my job.
Developing this creative platform has really helped me get back to my creative roots and this idea is a direct result of having had the time and space to think about my writing for more than a minute. I designed the landing page to be sexy and fun and give you all of the information you need to sign up for The Dirty Dispatch Club. The first dispatch goes out February 9, 2026 and will go out the first week of every month thereafter.
Snail Mail: Real Mail. Unreal Smut.
So if you want new smutty romance stories delivered directly to your mail box, to give you a reason to even go to the mail box anymore, sign up. It’s just $8. For reference, I spend $8.67 when I get a coffee at Starbucks. That coffee is worth it and so is The Dirty Dispatch Club. A snail mail club that offers fun, flirty, and frankly filthy smut in your mail box each month? Why the hell not? Treat yourself. Try it on for size. And see where it takes you.
